Settlement foundation, duration and destruction

in time along elevation gradient

Fig. 1. The region Vimpersko - Settlement foundation, duration or destruction during the Cold War along elevation gradient. A. Nearly all settlements remained in the lowest elevations above sea level, in conditions favourable for multipurpose use, based on agriculture. B. Settlements founded in the zone of bounds for rye and potato cultivation reflect two phases of  settlement network establishment: phase of network foundation in the zone and phase of thickening the settlement density in 17th century and later. 50% of settlements established in the second phase extinct and settlement estblished earlier all remain. C. The most of extinct settlements were situated in the environmental conditions unsuitable for corn and potato cultivation in the highest elevations above sea level, with beech, fir and spruce forest stages. In these stages, the settlements were founded paricularly with one purpose, i.e. timber production by period means and more than one half of them extinct. (Note: the elevation gradient in rhe fig. is irregular, use it only for rough orientation.)
